The New York Giants experienced their first season in the NFL football league in 1925. Since New York is such a large market and captures a wide audience, NFL football was able to survive in the beginning years with the help of the New York Giant’s fan base. The New York Giant’s first owner Tim Mara saw the importance of maintaining a spotlight for NFL football in New York. Without his awareness the NFL football league might not enjoy the success and notoriety that it does today. For this reason, NFL football and the New York Giants are tied together forever.
The popularity of the New York Giants was seen immediately. During the Giant’s first season, they even had a game against the Chicago Bears that at least 70,000 fans attended. This quickly demonstrated the influence the NFL football league would have over the population. If NFL football could capture the attention of the largest city, there would be no limits to it’s success.
It only took the New York Giants three seasons to capture their first NFL football championship. This was crucial because success in New York breeds more fans. The New York Giants defense, powered by Steve Owen, guided them to their championship season. During a span of thirteen games, only twenty points were scored against that vaunted Giants defense, which remains a record today. Owens’ success carried over to the sideline in 1930 when he became head coach of the New York Giants. His coaching career lasted twenty three seasons and he is among the most winning coaches of all time in NFL football. With Owen at the helm as coach, the New York Giants won two more championships in 1934 and 1938.
The success and dominance did not end there. Behind the strong coaching leadership of Jim Lee Howell and Allie Sherman, the New York giants captured another NFL football championship in 1956. During the 50’s and 60’s the New York Giants were normally the eastern championship representative in the Super Bowl. Those teams were led by Frank Gifford and Y. A. Tittle. After such a long reign of success, the New York Giants experienced their first extended period of failure.
During the 1970’s and up until the mid 1980’s the New York Giants were not a competitive powerhouse. This all changed when Bill Parcells took over as head coach of the New York Giants. Under his knowledge and leadership the Giants secured two more Super Bowl victories in 1986 and 1990. This success and championship tradition has only continued in the 2000’s. Due to the leadership of Tom Coughlin and outstanding quarterback play from Eli Manning, the Giants have won two more NFL football championships since 2007. In both recent Super Bowl appearances they have faced and beaten The New England patriots.
The New York Giants have always been run as a family business within the Mara bloodline. This has created a culture that exudes stability and excellence. Due to these characteristics the New York Giants have experienced success in almost every era of NFL football.
